TRIO Support Services |
|
The Center for Academic Excellence is a TRIO student support services program funded by the US Department of Education.
The Student Support Services Program is strongly committed to the academic success and personal growth of students. The program offers a wide range of services and activities free of charge to all eligible students.
The Student Support Services Program is designed to:
• Increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible students.
• Increase the transfer rate of eligible students from two-year to four-year institutions.
• Foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low-income and first generation college students and individuals with disabilities through services.
The goal of the University of Great Falls is to retain students whose background or circumstances do not always permit the greatest chances of success. Students in our program are eligible to receive extra hours for tutoring and have access to many workshops, i.e. study skills, time management as well as a host of other support services.
Any student is eligible to participate in a Student Support Services Program if:
• Neither his/her parents have a four-year college degree.
• He/She qualifies under federal financial guidelines.
• He/She has a documented disability (learning, physical, mental or other).

COMPASS is a new, comprehensive, computerized, adaptive testing system from ACT that helps place students into appropriate mathematics, reading and writing courses. COMPASS helps students identify their strengths as well as the knowledge and skills they will need in order to succeed in specific subject areas. COMPASS guides students to the courses and campus learning resources that will help them fulfill their individual plans, goals, and needs.
COMPASS scores indicate areas in which students are strong and areas in which students may need improvement. Thus, COMPASS can identify problems in major subject areas before they disrupt students’ educational progress, giving them the opportunity to prepare more effectively for needed courses.
The University uses scores from the COMPASS tests and the students’ biographical information to prepare a course of study that will be appropriate, relevant, and meaningful.
The results of the COMPASS Placement Test assist students and advisors in the selection of courses appropriate for the student’s level of academic preparedness in writing, mathematics, and reading.
The Center for Academic Excellence realizes that students with special needs deserve the challenge, the opportunity to succeed, and acceptance as a vital part of our academic community.
Students who are physically, mentally or learning impaired, and have documentation from a qualified clinical and/or medical professional verifying their special disability are urged to use The Center for Academic Excellence to receive:
• Counseling and Advocacy Service
