Seasons at UGF: 1st Season as Head Men's and Women's Cross Country & Track Coach

Jim Brewer begins his first season as the head coach for the Argos men’s and women’s cross-country/track teams. Brewer was a successful collegiate runner himself qualifying for the NAIA cross-country championships three times and qualifying for the NAIA track & field championships two different seasons. Brewer’s highest athletic accolade came when he earned All-American Honors for Western Washington University at the 1994 cross-country national championships. 

Brewer has extensive training and professional development in distance running and various track events.  He holds a Level 2 United States Track and Field Coaching Certification as well as a Level 3 National Coaching Certification through the United States Sports Academy.

Prior to moving to Great Falls with his wife and assistant coach, Rachel, he served a total of 6 years as an assistant cross-country/track coach for Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. Brewer also has five years of high school coaching experience with Mount Baker and Stanwood High Schools.

Fun Facts: Brewer grew up on a dairy farm. He loves to swim and is SCUBA certified. He also enjoys the outdoors and riding his motorcycle.

Seasons at UGF: 1st Season as Assistant Men's & Women's Cross Country & Track Coach

Rachel Brewer begins her first season as an assistant coach for the Argos men’s and women’s cross-country/track teams. Brewer (formerly Rieke) was a two-time NCAA Division I National Championship Qualifier for the nationally ranked Northern Arizona University Cross-country and Track teams. In the fall of 1997, Brewer’s cross-country team finished 10th in the nation at the NCAA championships and in the spring of 1998, she qualified for the NCAA track championships in the 3,000 meters with a personal record of 9:28 and finished 17th in the nation. Prior to college, Brewer earned 12 high school state championship titles for the state of Washington in outdoor track in the following events (3,200m, 1,600m, 800m, and 4 x 400m).

Brewer has her master’s degree in counseling and has taught math and science for the last 9 years at the high school and middle school levels. She has also coached cross-country and track at the college, high school, and middle school levels.

Fun Facts: Brewer’s high school graduating class was only 60 students. Her favorite way to relax is to play the piano and her favorite pastime is to backpack with her husband.

Seasons at UGF: 1st Season as a Graduate Assistant Cross Country & Track Coach

Casey Barten begins his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Argos men’s and women’s cross-country/track teams. Casey grew up in Snohomish, WA and comes to Great Falls, from Bellingham, WA. where he recently graduated from WWU with a degree in Psychology.  While at WWU Casey worked as a counselor in a drug treatment center and worked as an alcohol advisor in the campus resident halls.  Casey ran for WWU for four years competing in Cross-country and track where he was a 10,000 m specialist.  Casey plans on continuing to run and is training for the Las Vegas half marathon in December.  Casey is very excited to be part of the Argos running team and can’t wait to be involved in the MSC program this fall.

Fun Facts: While not running or spending time with his fiancé Casey likes to mountaineer and has made numerous summits of Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier in Washington State. Also, his favorite place in the whole city of Great Falls is the Big Mouth BBQ.
