The University of Great Falls announces Dr. Gerard Van Houdt, formally of Malta, Montana, as the recipient of its Alumnus of the Year Award. Dr. VanHoudt graduated magna cum laude from the College of Great Falls in 1976 with a BS in Biology and Chemistry minor, after which he graduated from MSU Bozeman’s WAMI program and went on to work as a naval flight surgeon. Dr. VanHoudt has over 28 years of experience in medicine and has worked at the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, WA, overseas in Spain as a rapid-response medical team leader for NASA, the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, and as an emergency physician in Pasco, Washington. He has also worked in family practice.
Dr. VanHoudt is married to Roxanne VanHoudt, with whom he has seven children ages 8 months to 26 years. As the middle child of a sixteen-sibling family, VanHoudt inspired all of his younger siblings to seek higher education. Dr. VanHoudt’s lifelong friend, nominator, and fellow College of Great Falls alum Dr. Robert Wiprud says, “Gerard VanHoudt beat the odds, was a tremendous student at CGF, served honorably in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, and now serves humanity as an emergency room physician. He is a wonderful example of a man living his Christian faith through service and giving.”
The University of Great Falls will honor Dr. Van Houdt during the 2012 Commencement Ceremony to be held on May 12th at 10:00 am in the University of Great Falls McLaughlin Center.
